Greek Food: The Vegetarian Edition

Italian, Thai, Tapas… what pops in your head when you’re wondering what to make for dinner? Not Greek. For some reason Greek food isn’t typically found at a trendy Shoreditch pop up, and there’s not a whole lot of 7 second mediterranean delights cooked on Tasty’s Facebook page. Why not? Greek cuisine is tactile, sociable and comforting with it’s finger food, mezze’s and sharing plates.  Food is inherently important to Greek people, they show affection through their food, celebrate special moments with special dishes and bond over traditional courses.

Greek food is all i’m going to be eating for the next 8 months, the only catch is; i’m wheat intolerant and a vegetarian, so here, where meat and bread are the staple of 95% of restaurant food and a cabbage salad means a bowl of cabbage, there’s a few things that are my saving grace. These nibbles are delicious and so quick to make back in England. So, here’s the easiest bites to eat that you can make and munch, in minutes: The Veggie Edition.


Feta with honey and sesame seeds

Greek food is all about cheese. Fried cheese, dip cheese, melted cheese. YES YES AND THRICE YES. Grab a wedge of Feta, about 1cm/2cm thick. Brush with egg and dust with flour. Brush with egg again and roll in sesame seeds. Fry both sides in oil and serve warm drizzled in honey. So dreamy. JUST LOOK AT IT.


Humous with olives and warm dipping wraps

Vegetarian greek foodGrab 400ml of chickpeas, half a lemon, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 tbsp olive oil and black pepper, whizz up or mash well, chop some green olives. I like to add parsley and paprika to the top and a splash of oil.

Serve with grilled warm wraps (if you can eat wraps without feeling like the guy from Alien who has that little dude shooting out your belly).

Stuffed tomatoes
These are a staple in my diet. I eat them every week and they’re super easy to make. Preheat the oven to 200c, grab some beef tomatoes and cut off the tops, scooping out the insides and saving for later. In a pan, with oil cook the inside of the tomatoes, onion, tomato puree, salt pepper and rice. Bring to the boil until the rice is cooked, right before its ready stir in parsley, mint and a squeezed lemon. Fill the tomatoes and pop in the oven with the tops back on. drizzle in oil, salt or balsamic oil. Bake for 45 mins to an hour until rice is soft. Authentic greek food at home.


Banana, strained yoghurt, raw honey and seeds.

This seems like just your classic insta-wvegetarian greek foodorthy brekkie. But the fruit, yoghurt and honey combo
originated in Greece. The most important part is not to use “low-fat” yoghurt. Full-fat strained yoghurt is so much better for you, full of good fats and not packed with sugar like “low-fat” types (there’s a reason they taste so good even though there’s no fat in them!), it’ll fill you up until lunch and be better for you in the long run. I add Almonds, raisins and sesame seeds to mine, with a drizzle of home-made honey I bought off a lovely Greek lady!

So next time you’re pondering what to whip up in the supermarket, make yourself a lil Greek food feast. Add a salad and you’ve got a beautiful and social spread. Grab a Mythos beer… You deserve it. Yamas!
